WhAT we are
In Their Image is a NYSCA- and Magnum Foundation-supported photo project by Queens-born photojournalist and museum educator Laila AnnMarie Stevens.
The intention of this project is to connect queer and trans youth across New York City in a visual dialogue with historical photographic archives of their queer ancestors, including leaders in politics, the arts, science, and more. Through collaborative portraiture and discussion, the project explores lineage and the impact that photographic records have on our memory of queer ancestors and how they inspire modern-day queer youth.
The portraits were be featured in a spirit-guided by Prophet Alchemist, dedicated installation and public program in September 2026 in New York, New York.
In Their Image is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
