WhAT we are

In Their Image is a NYSCA and Magnum Foundation supported photo-project by Brooklyn based and Queens born photojournalist and museum educator Laila Annmarie Stevens.

The intention of this project is to connect queer and trans youth across New York City in a visual dialogue with historical photographic archives of their queer ancestors, including leaders in politics, the arts, science, and more. Through collaborative portraiture and discussion, the project explores lineage and the impact that photographic records have on our memory of queer ancestors and how they inspire modern-day queer youth.

The portraits will be featured in a spirit-guided and dedicated installation and public program during June 2026's Pride Month in New York, New York. Additional details to be announced.

In Their Image is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
